Sarahna of Pennsylvania Frequently Asked Questions

We have included important information below, but feel free to email or call us with any other questions you may have.We are always happy to hear from you.
Where are you located?

We are located Meadville, Pennsylvania, ninety miles north of Pittsburgh on I-79.We are 35 miles south of Erie and are convenient to Cleveland and Buffalo.

What colors of Siamese and Balinese do you breed?
We breed all four solid-point colors: seal point (cream or fawn coat with very dark brown points), chocolate point (cream coat with milk chocolate to dark chocolate color points), blue point (cream to white coat with blue-gray to steel gray points), and lilac point (glacial white coat with pinkish-gray points). In future we will also have lynx-point kittens available.
Do you sell kittens with breeding rights?

We sell our kittens strictly as pets. All kittens are sent out with a spay/neuter contract and papers are provided as soon as we receive proof of surgery.

At what age do you place your kittens?

We place our kittens at ten to twelve weeks of age. Kittens need to learn cat - cat socialization skills so as to be able to read the body language of other pets in their new home, and they need to be well socialized in cat - human interactions. Kittens that have not been taken from their mothers too early, and who have been well socialized in the secure environment of their birth cattery, adapt well to a new home and do not display the problems of immaturity that kittens may who are placed at eight weeks. In addition, the immune system of a kitten is delicate until at least twelve weeks of age and the stress of moving to a new home and leaving its littermates can render it vulnerable to infections and illnesses. An older kitten is that much stronger and more capable of handling the transition to a new home in good health. Please see the article 'How Young is Too Young?' by Barbara C. French.

Do you guarantee your kittens?

All of our kittens come with a written health and genetic guarantee. They are guaranteed as to health for a 72 hour period after pickup or shipping, by which time it is essential that the new owner should have had them seen by a qualified veterinarian. The guarantee is dependent on the kitten being kept isolated from all other animals during that time. All kittens come with a genetic guarantee for their first year. Serious inquirers should see our contract for details.

Do you sell retired adults?

From time to time we may have select retired adults available that have been neutered or spayed and are ready for a pet home. A 'retired' adult is still young - usually less than five years old.

Do you offer stud service?

Sarahna is a closed cattery. For the health of our cats, we do not offer stud service under any circumstances.

Do your kittens have their shots?

At twelve weeks of age all of our kittens will have had appropriate immunizations for Panleukopenia (Distemper), Rhinotracheitis (Herpes), and Calicivirus. They will also have been dewormed. We do not immunize for Chlamydia, FeLV, or FIP. These are referred to in the veterinary literature as 'non-core' vaccines, meaning that they should only be given in circumstances where their benefits outweigh their risks. The use of non-core vaccines will void the health guarantee.

What do you think about declawing?

We do not approve of this procedure and will not place a kitten with an owner who intends to declaw. Declawing surgery involves amputation of the distal phalanges and can cause chronic pain, phantom limb pain, and other severe complications that can adversely affect a cat's health and temperament.  None of our adult cats are declawed; all have ample access to scratching posts and none of them attempt to scratch furniture or fabrics. These intelligent cats are easily trained not to use their claws on anything other than their designated scratching surfaces. On the other hand, we have known of several cats that had severe chronic pain and major changes in behavior and temperament after declawing. For those who still have concerns, the product Soft Paws cat claw covers is an excellent alternative. For more information, see www.declawing.com.

Is it all right for cats to go outdoors?

Siamese and Balinese cats are best suited as indoor companions. Outdoor cats are prone to many diseases, parasites, and injuries. They cause property damage and adversely affect the songbird population. All of a cat's needs for hunting and playing can be met in a healthy indoor environment. Siamese cats are particularly poorly suited for outdoor life - their coloring lacks camouflage, while their relatively poor night vision (for cats) puts them at a disadvantage. Siamese cats have evolved over time as human companions rather than as outdoor hunting cats, and they are especially vulnerable to larger predators and to injury. We ask our clients to keep their cats indoors, or to permit them outdoors only while on a harness or leash, or while in a secure outdoor enclosure for the cat's protection.

What form of payment do you accept?

We accept cash,  money orders,  wire transfers, or Paypal for deposits.

Deposits are non-refundable, unless, in some rare circumstance, we are unable to supply the kitten arranged for. In such a case we will refund a deposit; please see our contract for details.

Payment of the balance is due by a designated date prior to pickup or shipping. Cash, money order, wire transfer, or Paypal are the only methods of payment accepted at that time as well. No cat will leave our premises before payment of any balance, sales tax, and shipping charges has been received in full.

Do you ship your kittens?

We encourage adoptive families to pick up their new little one whenever possible. Should shipping be unavoidable, the new owner is responsible for all shipping costs, including airfare, health certificate, airline-approved crate, and transport of the kitten to the airport. Shipping costs within the US are generally in the neighborhood of $350, although this is a general estimate only. The exact cost will vary depending on airline prices and policies, fuel prices, and other factors. We use Continental Airlines exclusively for shipping and therefore can only ship to locations they serve.

Do you sell with a contract?

We sell all of our kittens and cats with a written contract.

What brand of food do you feed your cats?

We feed a premium  diet to our kittens and breeding cats that includes Life's Abundance dry food and Wellness Core, and Wellness Kitten wet foods. These foods use human-quality ingredients and have a low carbohydrate formulation, which is critical to feline health. We do not use foods that include corn, wheat, or soy as these grains and legumes promote dental disease, diabetes, and other serious health problems. We encourage new owners to investigate commercial raw diets and non-grain foods. We also use Trilogy Life's Abundance supplement and Skin and Coat Formula supplements to provide extra vitamins, calcium, omega fatty acids, and taurine for optimal health.

Our kittens will be started on Life's Abundance dry food and Wellness Kitten wet foods and the above supplements.

What cat litter do you use?

We use Fresh Step clay litter and Yesterday's News recycled paper litter. We do not use clumping clay litter for kittens or long-haired cats, as it may clump on their paws and be ingested, causing illness. We recommend non-clumping litter for every kitten until at least six months of age. Our kittens are trained with Yesterday's News.

Do your kittens have 'papers'?

All of our kittens are eligible for registration in the CFA and the CFF, and therefore each kitten will have papers. It is a common misconception that papers add significantly to the price of a kitten. It only costs about $15.00 to register a litter. Papers provide the kitten's new owner with assurance that the kitten is what he or she is represented to be, i.e. a purebred cat of a recognized breed, and that the breeder is registered with a reputable organization. Papers provide a genetic history that contains information about health, temperament, and the strengths and weaknesses in a cat's ancestry.  We encourage  thoughtful pet owners to choose a kitten from a cattery in good standing with a recognized registry.

Do you offer follow-up support and advice?

We offer open-ended follow-up support. We love to receive updates and pictures, and we are also happy to provide advice and suggestions at any time.

What are Colorpoint Shorthair cats?

A colorpoint shorthair is a cat of Siamese bloodlines that either is a nontraditional color, such as lynx-point, cream or red (flame) point, or tortie point, or, for registration in the CFA, that has an ancestor of a nontraditional color. A CFA-registered Colorpoint Shorthair may look exactly like a purebred Siamese, being seal, chocolate, blue, or lilac point. Other registries record cats of traditional point color as Siamese.
